Rebecca Hodges


Dr. Rebecca Hodges is a teacher committed to world class education and the mission of iEARN. She received a Bachelor's in International Relations, Masters in Middle East Studies, and PhD in Cultural Anthropology and has been involved with iEARN since 2005. Her dissertation, "Transformation of Sympathies: Teaching for a Knowledge Economy in Amman, Jordan" was based on 14 months of fieldwork with teachers in Jordan supplemented by teacher training research and presentations in Oman, Lebanon, Morocco, Egypt, Syria, and iEARN Qatar in 2013. She currently teaches International Baccalaureate Anthropology, history, and Theory of Knowledge at Lausanne Collegiate School in Memphis, Tennessee, USA.

Session Description

Would you like to improve the quality of student writing on discussion boards? This interactive workshop will help! Learn to guide students' posts that show a high level of academic engagement with course material and personal stories. The facilitator will share instructional design and experience of her first online course that produced very high student satisfaction, engagement in discussion, and high-level academic achievement. Participants will see her rubrics, screenshots from the course, student comments while they hear how her philosophy of authentic assessment shaped the course. Sample guides, rubrics, and student work will be provided to participants along with role-playing practice and one-on-one feedback.

What will educators learn and be able to do at the end of the session?

The purpose of the workshop is to improve teachers' abilities to facilitate high quality discussion board posts. Teaching students how to conduct conversationalĀ discussions is no small task but it is a skill that can be improved with intentional practice. Sample guides, rubrics, and student work will be provided to participants along with role-playing practice and one-on-one feedback.
